Here’s the inside scoop on the Book Collections app:

When we first started talking about making an app that would give people the features they missed from the old Kindle book collections, people told us it was impossible. The thing is, they’ll never know how close they were to being right. There’s a reason why Amazon hasn’t added book collections to the Fire in the 9 months since the device’s release and why there’s a 0% chance of them ever adding it. It’s not that they didn’t want to, it’s because they were UNABLE to. We knew we had to independently do this ourselves if it was ever going to get done.

When our programmers first began working on the app, it immediately became clear how the restrictions and limitations of the software prevented us from getting this done. The obstacles were numerous and overwhelming, but after a grueling amount of work we were able to find solutions.

When you first open the app, it’ll scan your drive and display all of your book files in an unsorted section on the main page. As time goes by and you acquire new books, you can tap the menu button at the bottom to scan them in. There are some starter folders at the top, which you can use, rename, or delete. Tapping on any book allows you to rename it, add author data, move it into a folder, or hide it from the app.

In addition to being able to organize everything, the app also features the ability to open up books for reading, which was long thought impossible. The only catch is that the Fire’s Kindle e-reader is unable to remember any information after you leave about where you stopped reading. When you’re done reading, you can hit the Back Arrow button where you’ll see a pop up menu that’ll allow you to quickly record your Location and % in the book. Then when you want to read again you can just flip back.

We’ve heard from people every single day since the Fire came out that they wanted to be able to organize their books, and we knew this was something we could do to help everyone get more enjoyment out of their Fires. We’re the #1 Kindle Fire resource for a reason, and we’re proud to be able to bring this to you. Early feedback on the app has been very positive. It gets the job done.

We hope you enjoy the Book Collections app! Remember: get it now, write a review, and there could be Gift Cards for you to win! Today’s a great day for the Kindle Fire!

    Sincerely,
    The Kindle Fire Department Team
