Sudden Death Overtime: Kindle Book of the Day 9/12

A delicious blend of dark humor, horror, hockey, and vampires, author Steve Vernon's highly rated Sudden Death Overtime is a fun read, plain and simple. With a vibe that reminds me of the movie Sean of the Dead, this is a story that will surprise you and carry you off to places you had no idea you wanted to go. And if you haven't read anything by Vernon yet, get ready to have a new favorite author. Start with this one!

Name: Sudden Death Overtime
Rating: 4.3 stars over 12 reviews
Price: 2.99
Description: Meet Sprague Deacon - one of the toughest old-time hockey players who ever skated upon a rink of hand-poured ice. Sprague was born and raised and he expects to die here on the Northern Labrador coast. What he did not expect was a tour bus full of vampires - none of whom glitter in the least bit - to pull into his town and begin lowering the population level - one corpse at a time. Sprague and his three best friends - an over-the-hill never-say quit bush league hockey team from Northern Labrador go toe-to-tooth with a tour bus full of vampires in an immortal-stakes showdown of street hockey? For the answer - throw Paul Newman's Slapshot into a blender with Steven Niles 30 Days of Night and hit frappe!

Reviews: "Steve Vernon is one of those authors, that brings a big smile to my face every time I hear he has a new book out. He is also one of those authors that fully understands that the heart of a good book is a good story. He is a master of story teller, filling his story with brilliant characters and equally brilliant, and realistic dialogue.

You know you are in for a thrilling read when the central premise of the story is a bunch of old guys going up against a bus load of vampires with a dash of ice hockey thrown in. This is not so much Buffy The Vampire Slayer, more like Auld Duffers The Vampire Slayers. In fact there are some similarities, both have cracking dialogue, and both have a nice sly line in humour.

Vernon builds the tension right up to a wonderful final battle scene on on the ice, which has one of he best uses of Holy water I have ever come across. By the time he throws in a shock ending, you will have just read, one hell of a short story. Sudden Death Overtime is perfect example of a good time, fun filled pulp short story that will have you hollering for the good guys and booing at the bad guys."
